Culture heritage becomes an experience
Solutions to attract visitors, entertain them and inform them through digital engagement.
CINECA, the largest computing center in Italy and one of the most important worldwide, is an Interuniversity Consortium that brings together 118 public institutions, including 70 Italian universities and 2 ministries. In the space it manages in Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna), within the former Tobacco Factory, it hosts “Leonardo,” the most powerful supercomputer in Italy and among the top in the world.
To enhance this location—an authentic Italian technology hub where research, innovation, and entrepreneurship intersect—we designed and created an experiential, exhibition, and emotional journey capable of conveying the Consortium’s mission and vision.
The multimedia installation unfolds inside the Botte C2 of the former Tobacco Factory, currently at the heart of a major urban regeneration project.
In line with the ongoing architectural enhancement, Touchwindow has designed a multimedia pathway that follows the common thread of innovation and digital transformation as drivers for improving processes and highlighting the value of data, placing people at the center.
The technological intervention, along with the immersive journey, begins in the entrance corridors, which have been transformed into interactive spaces that welcome visitors and introduce them to the world of CINECA.
The core of the project is the immersive corridor leading to the area where the Leonardo supercomputer is housed. This space, with its strong narrative and immersive character, is designed to engage the senses and visually communicate the complexity and power of supercomputing. Along this path, visitors do not merely observe—they literally step inside the story, because “The future is within us, long before it happens.”
Along the entrance corridors, three 86” multi-touch displays with hidden PCs have been installed, equipped with the Premium version of Touchviewer software. These stations serve as a window into the world of CINECA, from its origins in 1969 to the present day: from the dawn of supercomputing to the rise of HPC infrastructure. Visitors can embark on a journey spanning over half a century, enjoying smooth and intuitive navigation of content on high-definition interactive surfaces. The content perfectly embodies CINECA’s essence: numbers, data, and scientific contributions alternate with research projects designed to enhance people’s value, placing ethics and social responsibility at the core.
Upon entering the immersive corridor, visitors are enveloped by moving images, light effects, and reflections in a continuous stream of custom-created multimedia content.
The space has been completely transformed through a skillful integration of technological devices and scenic design elements:
A seamless projection system, consisting of eight 4K laser projectors, covers the vertical walls fitted with semi-transparent plexiglass panels, creating an engaging holographic effect.
The backlit floor generates kaleidoscopic reflections, amplifying the sense of immersion.
On the ceiling, four transparent holographic screens complete the technological and scenic setup, ideally surrounding the visitor in a 360° environment.
The video content, divided into distinct narrative blocks representing CINECA’s three cornerstones—innovation, research, and digital transformation—is synchronized and remotely managed through the Triatic platform. This system allows full control of the entire technological setup directly from a tablet, smartphone, or touch display, using a simple and intuitive interface equipped with customized presets tailored to the client’s specific use cases.
Completing the journey, a Live Capture System of the HPC Room—where the Leonardo supercomputer is installed—streams real-time footage of the Booster and Data-Centric modules to the interactive displays located along the entrance corridor. This allows all visitors to truly understand and appreciate the complexity and significance of supercomputing.
