CINECA

Interactive Multimedia Setup for CINECA: immersive technologies and innovation

CLIENT NEED

A multimedia installation to showcase Cineca’s excellence within the Italian and European ecosystem

CINECA, the largest computing centre in Italy and one of the most important worldwide, is an Interuniversity Consortium that brings together 118 public entities, including 70 Italian universities and 2 Ministries. Its space in Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna), inside the former tobacco factory, houses “Leonardo,” the most powerful supercomputer in Italy and among the most powerful in the world.

To enhance this location, an authentic Italian technological hub where research, innovation, and entrepreneurship intersect, we designed and built an experiential, exhibition, and emotional journey capable of conveying the Consortium’s mission and vision.

CONCEPT

CINECA is Designing the Future

The multimedia installation is located inside Hall C2 of the former tobacco factory, currently at the heart of a major urban regeneration project.

In line with the ongoing architectural enhancement process, Touchwindow has designed a multimedia journey that follows the common thread of innovation and digital transformation as levers for improving processes and highlighting the value of data, putting people at the centre.

The technological intervention and the immersive pathway start from the entrance corridors, transformed into interactive spaces that welcome visitors and introduce them to the world of CINECA.

The core of the project is the immersive corridor, which leads to the area where the Leonardo supercomputer is located. A highly narrative and immersive environment, designed to engage the senses and visually communicate the complexity and power of supercomputing. Along this path, visitors do not simply observe, but literally step into the story, because “The future is within us, long before it happens”.

DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

Seamless Projections and Interactive Stations Speaking the Language of Innovation

Multi-Touch Displays: A Window into the World of CINECA

Along the entrance corridors, three 86” multi-touch displays with concealed PCs have been installed, each equipped with the Premium version of Touchviewer software. These stations offer a window into the world of Cineca, from its origins in 1969 to the present day: from the dawn of supercomputing to the creation of HPC infrastructure; a journey spanning over half a century, which visitors can explore thanks to smooth and intuitive navigation of high-definition interactive content. The contents perfectly express the essence of Cineca: numbers, data, and scientific contributions are intertwined with research projects designed to empower people, placing ethics and social responsibility at the core.

Immersive Corridor: A 360-Degree Visual Experience

Upon entering the immersive corridor, visitors are enveloped by moving images, light effects, and reflections in a continuous flow of specially created multimedia content.

Here, space has been completely transformed through the skilful integration of technological devices and scenographic installations:

  • A seamless projection system made with eight 4K laser projectors covers the vertical walls, where semi-transparent plexiglass panels have been installed to create an engaging holographic effect.
  • The backlit floor generates kaleidoscopic reflections, amplifying the sense of immersion.
  • On the ceiling, four transparent holographic screens complete the technological and scenographic installation, ideally enveloping the visitor in a 360° experience.

Triatic Platform: Intuitive and Customized Control

The video content, divided into distinct narrative blocks representing the three pillars of CINECA, namely innovation, research, and digital transformation, is synchronised and remotely managed through the Triatic platform. This allows complete control of the technological setup from a tablet, smartphone, or touch display, via a simple and intuitive interface equipped with customised presets for the Client’s specific use cases.

Live Recording System: Inside the Heart of the Leonardo Supercomputer

To complete the experience, a Live Recording System in the HPC Room, where the Leonardo supercomputer is installed, streams visuals of the Booster and Data-Centric modules to the interactive displays along the entrance corridor. This allows all visitors to truly understand and appreciate the complexity and importance of supercomputing.

SUPPORT AND MAINTENANCE

Technology in the Client’s Hands, with Us Always by Their Side

installation was completed, the CINECA team was trained on how to use all implemented technological solutions from content management to environment monitoring.

Touchwindow continues to provide dedicated support services. Because innovation also means continuity, reliability, and care over time.
